Woo hoo! We’ve been begging for it for a long time and it’s now possible to change your old Facebook profile to a new(er) Business page without losing all your friends!

Why would I want to convert?

There are a lot of businesses out there using a “profile” to promote their businesses. There are several benefits to having a “like page” instead:

Automatic Acceptance – Potential followers of your business have to request to become your friend and you have to accept their request. This really slows things down (consider having to accept 2 million friend requests!!). With a business page, you get the “Like” button. When someone clicks “Like” they are automatically granted access to your page and all its functionality.

Customizability – With a personal profile you don’t get a lot of extra features, but with a business page you can use a whole slew of apps to create, in essence, a whole website within the Facebook framework. You might find this article useful: http://www.ecommerce-guide.com/article.php/3856851/How-to-Customize-a-Business-Facebook-Page-with-Apps.htm

Easier to Promote – Facebook has a bunch of features around their site that makes it easier for people to find you and spread the word. For example, the right-hand side of the page often shows companies your friends like.

How to migrate your Facebook profile to a business page

This page from the Facebook help file shows how it’s done: https://www.facebook.com/help/?page=18918

..and when you’re ready for help promoting your business online, call us and we’ll tell you how for free.

Yeah, I know it’s a bold statement. This is not time to hold back in meekness. If the system is going to change for the better, it’s high time we take some bold action!

This very second there are in your ear trying to get you to spend your hard-earned money (with them, of course!). So many people, in fact, that I have seen a lot of you just stop spending altogether! If you don’t need it to survive, like food, mortgage, electricity, etc., just forget it.

I know why you’ve stopped spending. You have heard empty promises and seen little in the way of results, times have changed, old stuff no longer works, and you’re sick of it. If it’s not proven to work, don’t do it.

But the economists tell me to spend my money…

Yes, but many of these people are paid a salary either by banks and financial institutions or the US Government. If you look at the short-term pro forma, then spending money today helps circulation tomorrow. What about 6 months from now? A year? Aren’t we in this problem because of short-term irresponsibility by banks, financial institutions, and government? (i.e. government allowing the loopholes that banks and financial institutions used to create short-term gains/long-term problems.)

Economists (politicians, etc.) tell you to spend money just as you were before (when you were complacent about it?!). They might even throw in a “be smart about it” routine, but they never back it up with real details or ways that you can really make a difference.

What they don’t tell you is HOW

How to spend money is just as important (if not more) as having money to spend! You need to look critically at every dollar going out, and be able to come up with a good reason it leaves your pocket. If you can’t come up with a logical reason, then STOP!

How you do…

Joe Vitale is a great sales and marketing trainer/expert/writer I really enjoy learning from. One of the things he teaches is that “people buy with emotion and justify their decision through logic.” It’s very true, and every good marketer knows it…

…therein lies the problem!

If you buy with emotion, you’re not truly in control are you? You’d like to think you make logical decisions but it’s likely you make a lot of decisions with emotion and you’re only making up the logic part on your own to justify that you think you’re right (are you?). Think of a time when you decided it was okay to have that soda at the register because you had been good all day. (Or a slice of cheesecake…) Or you kept working with that one merchant services company because you liked the guy and wanted to remain loyal- even though his fees were 2% higher per transaction than the other person you didn’t know.

We all do it. Don’t feel bad… but get over it.

How you should…

You need to make all business decisions with logic first. Every expense should support your single goal: making sales… and thus making PROFIT!

(Example: How do you make enough profit when 2% of your credit card sales are going to someone else. The term there is called “Profit Erosion”!)

Common Mistakes

When I was first starting out in business, I bought a printer, special custom pens, even a few cubicles, and of course a nice, bright, red sign on the road. I thought that if I “looked” like a business then I would be successful. I wound up printing things that just found their way to the trash. When I moved my office location, I counted up all the brochures and extra equipment and estimated about $6000 of wasted money because none of the stuff was ever really used! And that was just one closet of things I kept! (And BTW, my business was internet-based, so that sign on the road only led to walk-in traffic for people wanting to “buy a website.” What were they going to do, put it in their car and take it home with them?!)

Marketing is another area where businesses make a plethora of mistakes. Think about that yellow pages ad you spent several thousand dollars on- or that coupon in the clipper magazine that didn’t bring you any business. You have to try something in order to know if it doesn’t work, right? What if you had a guide who already has the experience of trying, failing AND succeeding?

Many businesses start out by getting an ad in the paper, buying a bunch of stuff they don’t need, wasting time on frivolous activities and ultimately hurting their profitability. The good news is you CAN avoid these problems.

What to do about it

Here’s a quick list to get you started:

Print out a detailed list of all of your expenses and take a good, hard at each one of them. If you need it, keep it. If you don’t need it, take a wild guess….. yep, cut it!

Look also at your marketing expenses both monthly and annually. Each one of your marketing activities should be trackable and you should be able to tell quickly if it’s making you enough ROI or not. Could you be spending those dollars on something else with a better ROI?

What is your equipment like? What benefits (profits) could you get out of upgrading?

Do you have someone who can answer these types of questions?

I have a questionnaire that we can work on together and identify a lot of areas where you can be saving money. Contact me to set up a meeting and we’ll figure that out together. You may qualify for my pro bono consulting so you might not need to pay anything for the consultation either!

Get Started Now

Even if you don’t contact me for help, make absolute sure your business is operating efficiently with each dollar that goes out!

Spending a lot of time writing custom emails to business leads? Want a way to spend LESS time doing that so you can spend more time nurturing the relationships.

Most initial sales contacts boil down to a small handful of themes:

- Initial, cold outreach.

- Who are you and what do you do?

- How can I help you?

- Responding to a specific question prompted by a promotion campaign.

Take a minute and look through your email’s ‘sent items’ folder and see if you can find any commonalities. Then, write those down into your ‘Frequent Emails’ list.

Once you have a list of the most common reasons you have communicated with people, you can write a script. **You probably already have the script written in one of these recent emails- use it, baby!

Example #1 – Initial outreach on LinkedIn to connect with someone

Hello! After looking thru your profile, I’d like to request adding you to my professional network on LinkedIn. Thank you, and looking forward to connecting!

- Jay Syzdek

P.S. If you see a way we might be able to work together or become referral partners, please Reply or message me!

BTW- if you’re connected to me on LinkedIn, you probably received this exact message from me! Looks like it works…

Example #2 – Already connected on LinkedIn and I want to see if we could be partners

Hello __firstname__,

I trust you’re having a great, productive day!

Ever since we got connected here, I’ve thought that we might be able to partner together in some way. So, I’m just sending you a quick message to see if you might be open to doing some possible business together for your network.

Let me know if you’re open to finding ways of doing something that benefits everybody, and maybe we can bounce some ideas around via email or phone!

I’m glad we’re connected, and look forward to talking with you!

- Jay

GET SOMEONE TO REVIEW IT

When you write your script, ask others to review it before sending out. You want to make sure you sound personal and genuine. We all know where the delete button is and it’s too easy to press it on your message if it sounds at all contrived.

FINAL NOTE

Writing a script should speed up your communications, NOT replace genuine interaction. There are many places where a custom message is more appropriate, so be sure to find a good balance between the two for your company.

Tired of spending time on unqualified prospects? Getting a lot of randomness from your LinkedIn profile?

Here’s an exercise to help you maximize the impact of the time you spend communicating.

STEP 1: MAKE A LIST OF QUALIFICATIONS

Write out 5-8 very specific traits of an actual customer- and a customer who appreciates your product or service.

Example #1 – Business Coach
-	Prospect is interested in *working* toward personal/business growth (i.e. not looking for a quick fix)
-	Prospect has $200 per month to spend on a 2-session course
-	The person is a decision-maker/in a position to actually buy my service
-	Etc.

Example #2 – Car Battery Salesman
-	Prospect owns a vehicle (it may seem obvious, but how would you like spending 20 minutes talking to a guy who only rides a bike!?)
-	Prospect has not purchased a batter in the past 1 year
-	The person has $40-100 to spend on a new battery
-	Etc.

STEP 2: FOCUS ON QUALIFIED PEOPLE

It sounds simple, but think how often you wasted valuable time try to sell to someone who simply couldn’t buy from you. Be polite, of course, but you don’t have to work with these people. If you create a way to DIS-qualify people, you will have an easier time identifying those people who WILL buy. Then, you have MORE TIME to spend on them.

Social Media is nothing new. Read this article for more info about that.

Take what you already know and apply it to the new medium. So you can get back to work and start making this happen, I’ll break it down into a few bullet points:

You know people don’t like getting spam, do don’t send it.

People want to build relationships – Start There!

Reach out to professionals politely and individually (and be friendly).

Get to the point.

Don’t make stuff up – it won’t help you.

That’s it!

Three Easy Steps to Make It Happen:

Step 1: Search through your existing network (I’d start with LinkedIn) for people who you could benefit. (Remember “Givers Gain”)

Step 2: Send an email to this person saying something like “Let’s chat by phone soon- I would enjoy learning more about your business!”

Step 3: Have the meeting, build a mutually-beneficial relationship and enjoy!

Week 3: Changing the game for your gain…

Last week we talked about how to pull people into your sales funnel. This week we’ll show you How to get creative and stand out.

Everybody wants to stand out

Seriously, it’s ridiculous. Every business wants to stand out so much that it has created a situation like a crowded bar when everyone is yelling so loud their throat hurts- all just to try and have a simple conversation.

How do you stand out from the crowd? The answer is so simple, yet few people are doing this effectively…

Get out of the crowd. No, really. As soon as you make contact with a potential client, get them out and away as quickly as possible so they can actually hear you and you don’t have to shout!

How do you do that? This is the tricky part- because people have to trust you before they take your hand and follow you away from the ‘comfort of anonymity.’ The real trick is is to change the game altogether. To do this you MUST know what your competition is doing and then do something no one else is doing.

For example, there’s an optometrist in NC that talks up their cool coffee machine. It is pretty slick actually- you put a little cartridge in the machine, slide your mug under the spout, hit a button and out comes hot, tasty, gourmet coffee. The machine itself looks cool too. Now, that alone is really nothing, but it’s the first thing people often go to when they sit down in the waiting room- thus beginning a classy experience.

This optometrist then cut an exclusive deal with Chanel, a fashion designer who is so picky that it’s hard to find a practice that carries their frames. The owner had to work hard to make their store look top-notch and even the employees at the front desk tend to dress classy. The entire experience from start to finish is one of class, fashion, and slickness. Game-changer.

Here are a whole bunch of ideas of how you can be a Game-Changer:

Have your front-desk people be so friendly that they offer to get coffee/tea to everyone who comes into your waiting room.

Call back a prospect within 5 minutes of their email/voicemail/inquiry.

Give away free service which allows them a one-on-one taste of how your business works. And do it with no catch!

Have a real, live meeting with prospects.

Here’s one we so often forget: Smile and be GENUINELY interested in WHO they are!

Find ways to help people that are not directly self-serving. (The rewards come anyway because people like doing business with you.)

Give referrals.

Be a true expert- don’t just call yourself one. (Have you ever been skeptical of someone’s actual experience? Yeah, me to.)

…and back it up: be open with the proof. Give people a copy of your resume or CV without being asked. (Why give them an opportunity to wonder?)

Send thank you cards- Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a big fan of these. In a world where communication is so electronic, why not put something tangible in your prospects hands?

Call me for some more: (215) 240-1776 x802.

I love to brainstorm and would enjoy talking with you (no charge).

There are ONLY 10 spots on page 1, and thousands of people are fighting for it! SEO can get expensive, especially if you have a lot of competition.

Want to skip all the fighting and get people straight to your website? Hand ‘em your business card. LOL!

I know you’re rolling your eyes, but I’m serious. Personal networking lets people get to know the real you and they stop caring about the rest of your competitors quickly!

Go to a mixer, invite some people to have a one-to-one over coffee, and tell them to go to your website.

Week 2: Funneling in or out…

Last week we talked about how to create a qualification system. This week we’ll show you How to funnel people IN or OUT using your qualifications.

Step 1: Identify where your prospects are right now

If you’re like most people, you connect with people in a variety of ways like Facebook posts, LinkedIn group discussions, direct emails from your website, inquries from an article or press release, etc.

The key to funneling people In or Out is to figure out the behaviors that make a paying client. With One Blink Media, I don’t really consider someone a lead until they actually engage in conversation with me. We put a lot of “feelers” out there, and people become a lead when they respond directly. For example, we’ll promote one of our free ebooks and see if anyone is interested at the time. If someone who downloads an ebook writes back saying “I’m interested in talking further” that is actually a potential sale. Conversely, someone who doesn’t want to speak directly might get a lot out of the information, but they’re not interested in spending money with us at the moment.

TASK:

Write down each place where you are visible online. (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)

Next to each of these places, write how you would like people to reach out to you (many might be the same).

Now, take the list of Qualifications you wrote last week and figure out the answer to: “How do you find out if the person you’re talking to is qualified?”

For me, active discussion is necessary to have a good client. Maybe I wrote them back but they never got back to me. Disqualified.

Another Example:

What if you’re a virtual assistant? Let’s say you need to find out if the company you’re talking to has a need for your services. You schedule a 15-minute consultation with the company and they agree. BTW, most people see this as a time to prove themselves to the prospect, but it’s also an opportunity for the prospect to prove they’re a good fit!

During the call, you ask the prospect about their staff- Do they have administrative support? Do they have busy executives that need help? Do they need a specific type of skill that you provide? If the company already has a well filled-out staff (or they have existing staff that are sitting around, bored), they are probably disqualified. On the other hand, these questions could lead the prospect to a sale. Either way it helps you to do this!

In my last post, I discussed different ways to use social media for personal and entertainment reasons. I had explained how time-consuming social media activities could be, and that in order to not have your time sucked up, you need to select only the social media most conducive to your needs.

This week, I want to talk about using social media for business purposes. Women have a very strong presence on the internet, and many of us have small businesses we want to promote. But before I get into what social media you should be using, I want to share the benefits of a business using social media.

20 Reasons Your Small Business should Use Social Media

Branding – Create a recognizable identity for your product or service. This is extremely important for a small business.

Create a buzz – Get the word out about your products and services in a way that promotes online conversation.

Online reputation management – Keep an eye on what other people and sites are saying about your name, company, or brand online – and fix any problems, if need be.

Establish yourself as an expert – Use forums and message boards to answer questions professionally, honestly, and correctly, which will earn you respect as an expert in your niche. People will look to you for answers.

Word of mouth – Customers need to trust before purchasing – people trust their friends and loved ones more than anyone else. So, if they hear from someone trustworthy about your product, chances are higher that they’ll buy. Market your products using word of mouth virtually.

Build relationships and become more personal – Use a variety of social media, and you’ll build relationships with customers and potential customers. Trust comes through honesty and sincerity.

Open up the line of communication between business owner and millions of potential customers - Millions of people who could possibly become customers? You could not have this easily in the offline world.

Small businesses can compete with the large companies – In the past, this was very difficult with the advertising and marketing budgets of large companies. With the right type of viral social media, you could get an immense amount of traffic with quickly-growing natural links, and keep traffic coming for a long time.

Social networking with potential clients and customers from all over the globe – With social networking sites such as Facebook, StumbleUpon, MySpace and Twitter, among many, many others, you can hold personal conversations with each of your customers. Tell them about new products, sales and coupons, suggestions and tips – the topics are endless.

Get great traffic - Not only great traffic…. but freakishly crazy amounts of traffic. For example, if one of your items becomes viral and makes it to the front page of Yahoo Buzz (a social news site), it could get you 100,000 to 1,000,000 viewers; from Digg around 2,000 to 60,000; and from Reddit around 2,500 to 30,000. Check out some more awesome stats on this great post by The SEO Company.

Increase your link-ability – One way to move up in the search engines is to have links from other sites pointed to your site. Natural links – or links that come naturally to your great post, awesome video, or amazing picture, are the best kind for your business. They’ll not only bring in traffic, but should also help move you up further in the search engines.

Helps with search engines – Like I mentioned above, social media helps you move up in the search engines because of links. Many social news sites and social networking sites have “do follow” links in their profile pages. Every time you create a profile with your blog, they will be sending link juice to you – in other words, it’s telling Google your blog is worthy of a mention. Link juice from a quality site = higher ranking in the search engines.

Much cheaper than traditional marketing and advertising – Social media marketing shouldn’t cost a small business nearly as much as traditional advertising. And, if you do it yourself, it might not cost a dime. However, it will cost you time. Depending how much your time is worth, it might be worthwhile to hire someone to help with the social media marketing. But, all in all, social media marketing is just a fraction of the cost of traditional marketing and advertising.

Your company is more accessible – An accessible company means a more trustworthy company.

Direct conversation to a specific niche – There are so many social networking, social bookmarking, and social news sites that are dedicated to specific niches. You have the ability to speak directly to these people and not have all the other noise of unrelated topics getting in the way. If you are speaking their language, you have a better chance of them actually hearing what you are saying – and you’re getting the RIGHT KIND of following.

Provides another way for potential customers to find you – If you’re not high enough in the search engines for potential customers to find you, they can still find you through social media. So, even if you’re not on the front page of Google, it doesn’t mean you can’t receive traffic. Social Media has the potential to send you TONS of traffic – when done properly (I’ll write more on that soon!).

It’s a way to explain yourself – One of the reasons some businesses are skiddish about social media is because they’re afraid of negative comments. It’s possible to receive negative comments. But, social media provides the platform to explain, to make things right. The fact of the matter is – if someone has something negative to say they can say it. Ignoring them doesn’t stop the damage. But, when you reply, you are seen as a business owner who cares, who wants to make the customer happy, and that you’re human. Social media is a two-way conversation, so go ahead and defend yourself – just do it proactively.

Show Your Stuff – Universal Search is pretty new. Google used to only list links on their main page. They had videos, but you would have to click on the video search link. They had images, but you had to click on the images search link. Now, with Google Search, everything appears on the same page. Let’s say you were searching “ballerina” – video and picture results appear on the same page as the page result. So, your product images could rank, just like your actual site. This is awesome, and something business owners should take advantage of.

Universal Search Visual Example

Find out exactly what your customers want – Social media is amazing in so many ways, as you can see from the last 18 reasons. But, what is so cool is that you don’t have to wonder what your customers want. You want to know what they want? Ask them on social media, and they’ll tell you.

Your customers can play an active role in the business – Instead of focus groups, let your customers play an active role in your business. Let them offer suggestions, let them share their likes and dislikes – all on social media. You might find yourself ideas for new products and services you’d never have without them.

Bottom line – marketing is about getting out the word, engaging in conversations, taking suggestions, problem solving, educating your audience, and promoting your company, product, or service. One of the best ways for small businesses to create buzz is through social media.
